Blessed Margaret of Castello

Blessed Margaret of Castello was born blind with severe curvature of the spine and stunted growth. Her parents hid her from the public in a walled-in chamber next to the castle’s chapel (where she could received instruction and the sacraments) until she was sixteen. After not being cured at a shrine in nearby Castello, she was abandoned by them and cared for by the townspeople as one of the poor. She became a Third Order Dominican and gave back to the community by teaching catechism to children and providing childcare to working families. In 1558 she was found incorrupt and was beatified in 1609.
