7. The Substance and Accidents of a Catholic Society

Monsignor Ignacio Barreiro Carambula declares that the separation of Church and State is neither natural nor good. The Church bears the higher responsibility to direct souls to heaven, but the State should institute laws that give justice to God, the Giver of Natural Law. Euthanasia, abortion and the oppression of the poor are abhorrrant to God’s design for mankind. Human rights are neither instituted by the State nor created by law. They are given by God. Finally, the substance of a Catholic society is that it is organized upon Natural Law and the precepts of the Gospels. Thus, the type of political system is merely an accident. When the teachings of the Church are espoused to traditional methods of governance, the emerging Catholic society will flourish. 2008 Roman Forum Gardone conference – These Ruins are Inhabited.
