Saint Juan Diego was a native of Mexico who was one of the first to be baptized by the Franciscan missionaries. In December of 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared to him, and ultimately he was given a miraculous image emblazoned on his tilma to witness to the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe before the bishop. The miraculous image and her message resulted in the mass conversion of the Mexican people and thier enduring to devotion to Our Lady. Juan Diego was canonized on July 31, 2002.
