Saint Benedict Joseph Labre was a French Franciscan tertiary, from a well to do family near Arras, France. After attempting a monastic lifestyle, he joined the Third Order Franciscans and lived a life of poverty and pilgrimage. He traveled to most of the major shrines of Europe, subsisting by begging, following in the role of the mendicant, the “Fool-for-Christ.” Saint Benedict Labre is the patron saint of the homeless.
